NPC Says Nigeria Records About Five Million Births Every Year

The National Population Commission (NPC) has revealed that Nigeria records approximately five million births every year, highlighting the country’s rapidly growing population. The commission made the announcement while introducing new measures aimed at improving the registration of births and deaths across the country.

According to the NPC, many births are still not officially registered, making it difficult for the government to plan effectively for healthcare, education, and other essential public services. To address this challenge, the commission has launched a digital birth and death registration system that will make the process faster and more accessible for Nigerians.

Officials explained that accurate population records are important for national planning, policy development, and the fair distribution of resources. They also encouraged parents and guardians to register their children’s births promptly, noting that birth certificates are often required for school enrollment, passport applications, and other official purposes.

The NPC says it will continue working with state governments, healthcare facilities, and community leaders to improve birth registration nationwide. The commission hopes the new digital system will help ensure that every Nigerian is properly documented, providing more reliable data for future development and national planning.
