Senate President Godswill Akpabio has explained why he left the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for the All Progressives Congress (APC), saying he realised he had been in the "wrong party."
Akpabio said his decision to defect was driven by his belief that he is a progressive-minded politician who naturally belongs in the APC.
The Senate President made the remarks on Friday while speaking at the inauguration of access roads to the Renewed Hope Cities and Estates in the Karsana West District of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja.

'A Progressive-Minded Person Belongs To A Progressive Family'
Addressing guests at the event, Akpabio said he found his true political home after the APC approached him.
"A progressive-minded person like me should belong to a progressive family. Therefore, when APC came to me, I discovered that was my group and that I was in the wrong party, called PDP. So, I took my exit early and joined the progressives," he said.
The Senate President used the occasion to reaffirm his commitment to the ruling party and its progressive ideology.
Akpabio Defected To APC In 2018
Akpabio officially left the Peoples Democratic Party for the All Progressives Congress on August 8, 2018, ending years of political association with the PDP.
Before announcing his defection, he resigned from his position as Senate Minority Leader.
He was subsequently received into the APC during a well-attended mega rally at the Ikot Ekpene Township Stadium in Akwa Ibom State, marking one of the high-profile defections ahead of the 2019 general elections.
His latest remarks come as political activities continue to gather momentum ahead of the 2027 elections, with parties intensifying efforts to strengthen their ranks and consolidate support across the country.
