[JUST IN]: Germany Sack Nagelsmann After World Cup Exit, Set To Open Talks With Jürgen Klopp

Germany have officially parted ways with head coach Julian Nagelsmann following the country's disappointing exit from the 2026 FIFA World Cup, with the German Football Association (DFB) confirming it will begin formal talks with Jürgen Klopp over the vacant managerial position.

The DFB announced on Thursday that its shareholder representatives and supervisory board unanimously approved the immediate termination of Nagelsmann's contract after accepting the recommendation of president Bernd Neuendorf.

According to the federation, the decision came after a private meeting held a day earlier, during which Nagelsmann requested to step down following Germany's early World Cup exit in the United States, Canada and Mexico.

DFB Pays Tribute To Nagelsmann

Despite his departure, the DFB praised Nagelsmann for his commitment and professionalism during his time in charge of the national team.

DFB president Bernd Neuendorf said the federation holds the former Bayern Munich coach in high regard.

"The DFB sincerely thanks Nagelsmann for his outstanding work since September 2023. He has consistently demonstrated tremendous commitment and dedication. He is also a highly principled, sincere, and honourable person, and we hold him in the highest respect," Neuendorf said.

"The Team Needs A Fresh Start" – Nagelsmann

Explaining his decision to resign, Nagelsmann admitted it was one of the most difficult choices of his career but insisted Germany needed a fresh beginning after the World Cup disappointment.

"Since the team's exit, I have reflected deeply and held extensive discussions with those close to me and with the DFB. This decision was not easy. My goal has always been the team's success," he said.

The 39-year-old added that the national team deserved a clean slate free from the burden of recent failures.

"After such a significant defeat, this team deserves a fresh start without the weight of the past. I want to thank my coaching staff, the players, and everyone at the DFB who supported us."

Nagelsmann also expressed gratitude to German supporters while apologising for failing to deliver a memorable World Cup campaign.

"I am especially grateful to the fans for your unwavering support and trust. I am deeply sorry that I could not deliver more memorable World Cup moments and that I fell short of your expectations. You deserved better," he added.

Rudi Völler Backs Decision

Germany's sporting director Rudi Völler said the World Cup exit was disappointing but praised Nagelsmann for taking responsibility and placing the interests of the national team above his own.

Völler described Nagelsmann as an outstanding coach and expressed confidence that he would enjoy success elsewhere in the future.

Klopp Emerges As Favourite

Attention has now shifted to former Liverpool manager Jürgen Klopp, with the DFB confirming it will immediately begin formal discussions with the German tactician over the vacant coaching role.

Klopp has previously indicated that he would be open to managing the German national team, making him the leading candidate to succeed Nagelsmann.

More Changes At The DFB

The German Football Association also confirmed the departure of assistant coaches Benjamin Glück and Benjamin Hübner, thanking both men for their contributions during Nagelsmann's tenure.

In another major development, DFB Sports Managing Director Andreas Rettig announced he would leave his position when his contract expires at the end of the year.

Rettig said his decision was based on personal reasons and revealed that he informed DFB president Bernd Neuendorf before the start of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
