Germany Promises Stronger Security and Economic Support for Nigeria

Germany has reaffirmed its commitment to supporting Nigeria in the fight against terrorism and other security threats. During a visit to Abuja, German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul met with Nigeria’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu, where both countries discussed expanding cooperation on security, trade, and investment.

As part of the partnership, Germany announced it will provide €10 million this year to support the return and reintegration of people displaced by violence caused by Boko Haram and Islamic State-linked militants. The German government also expressed concern over the worsening security situation in the Sahel region, saying instability in neighbouring countries continues to affect West Africa.

Beyond security, both countries agreed to strengthen economic relations. Germany described Nigeria as a key strategic partner and noted that bilateral trade between the two nations increased by about 10% over the past year. More than 100 German companies currently operate in Nigeria, with both governments looking to encourage further investment in sectors such as renewable energy, manufacturing, agriculture, transport, and digital technology.

The renewed partnership has been welcomed as a positive step for both countries. Analysts believe stronger cooperation in security and business could help Nigeria tackle insecurity while creating more economic opportunities, jobs, and foreign investment. Officials from both nations also pledged to continue working together to promote stability and sustainable development across West Africa.
