At least 12 people have been confirmed dead following a tragic auto crash along the Benin–Auchi–Lokoja Road in Edo State, while 14 others sustained varying degrees of injuries.
The accident reportedly occurred at Egono, near Ewu axis, when a truck carrying passengers and goods heading toward Benin City lost control after a wrongful overtaking maneuver and crashed violently along the highway.
Eyewitnesses said the impact of the crash was severe, trapping several passengers inside the vehicle, while emergency responders rushed to the scene to evacuate survivors and recover the bodies of the deceased.
Officials of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) confirmed the incident, stating that speed violation and dangerous overtaking were responsible for the fatal crash.
The injured victims were taken to nearby hospitals for treatment, while the bodies of the deceased were deposited in a mortuary.
Authorities have urged motorists to exercise caution on highways, especially along the busy Benin–Auchi route, which has recorded multiple accidents in recent times.
