IPOB Hails US Lawmakers’ Intervention, Insists on Referendum as Nigeria Crisis Deepens

The Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) has commended American citizen Mark Arnold and members of the United States Congress for what it described as a “bold and timely intervention” concerning the situation in Nigeria.

In a press statement issued on Thursday by its spokesperson, Emma Powerful, the group said the actions of the US figures have drawn global attention to security concerns and alleged attacks on communities in parts of the country.

IPOB, under the leadership of Nnamdi Kanu, claimed that the intervention has “broken the silence” of the international community and warned of worsening conditions if urgent steps are not taken.

The group alleged that several regions, including the Middle Belt, Southern Kaduna, Plateau and Benue states, have witnessed violent attacks, while also raising concerns about security challenges in parts of the South-West.

According to the statement, IPOB believes that only a peaceful, internationally supervised referendum would address its long-standing demand for self-determination.

“The singular demand of IPOB remains a peaceful, internationally supervised referendum for the people of Biafra to decide their political destiny,” the statement read.

The group added that any attempt to suppress such demands through force or intimidation could further escalate tensions and instability in the country.

IPOB also called on its supporters and the international community to intensify diplomatic efforts to push its agenda globally, insisting that Nigeria is facing serious challenges that require urgent and lasting solutions.

The statement comes amid ongoing debates about security, governance, and national unity in Nigeria.
