Tension erupted in Rivers State on Friday after suspected thugs disrupted a women’s political gathering organised by members of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) in Eleme Local Government Area.
The incident occurred in Alesa Eleme, where participants had gathered for what was described as a maiden meeting of the ADC Young Women’s Forum.
Eyewitnesses said the attackers stormed the venue unexpectedly, scattering attendees and destroying property. Canopies were pulled down, while chairs and sound equipment were vandalised, forcing participants to flee for safety.
Sources indicated that the disruption was allegedly based on claims that the organisers failed to obtain prior approval to hold the event. The intruders also reportedly argued that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) had not authorised any political activity in the area.
Reacting to the incident, the National Coordinator of the ADC Young Women’s Forum, Atosemi Oma-Uwame, strongly condemned the attack, insisting that the gathering was peaceful and not a campaign rally.
“We gathered here today to inaugurate the ADC Young Women Forum in Eleme LGA. Thugs led by a ward councillor disrupted our meeting,” she said.
Oma-Uwame alleged that the councillor claimed the group did not secure approval from his office, adding that she was warned beforehand not to organise any event under the ADC platform in the area.
“The disruption of our meeting is an attempt to stifle democracy and prevent political engagement,” she stated.
She explained that the event, organised in collaboration with The Atosemi Movement (TAM), was aimed at mobilising women at the grassroots and encouraging greater participation in politics.
According to her, the forum seeks to provide a platform for young women to organise, build confidence, and pursue political aspirations within the party structure.
“Young women should not shy away from politics. We encourage those interested to obtain party forms and contest,” Oma-Uwame added.
The incident has raised fresh concerns about political tolerance and grassroots participation, particularly as stakeholders call for a peaceful and inclusive democratic space.
