[JUST IN]: Senate Confirms Joseph Oyewole as Supreme Court Justice

The Senate has confirmed Joseph Oyewole, presiding justice of the Court of Appeal, Enugu State division, as a justice of the Supreme Court of Nigeria.

The confirmation came after the Senate Committee on Judiciary, Human Rights & Legal Matters, chaired by Senator Adeniyi Adegbonmire (Ondo Central), presented and adopted a report recommending Oyewole’s elevation.

During his presentation, Adegbonmire said,

“The Senate do receive and consider the report of the Committee on Judiciary, Human Rights & Legal Matters on the confirmation of the nomination of Hon. Justice Joseph Olubunmi Kayode Oyewole, JCA, as a Justice of the Supreme Court of Nigeria.”

The confirmation follows a presidential request by President Bola Tinubu last week seeking legislative approval for Oyewole’s appointment. Senate President Godswill Akpabio formally read the presidential communication during plenary, noting the request was made pursuant to Section 231(2) of the 1999 Constitution.

In the letter, President Tinubu stated:

“I am pleased to present for confirmation by the Senate the appointment of Hon. Justice Oyewole Kayode as Justice of the Supreme Court of Nigeria. While it is my hope that the Senate will consider and confirm the nomination expeditiously, please accept the assurances of my highest regards.”

Akpabio then referred the executive communication to the Senate Committee on Judiciary, Human Rights & Legal Matters for legislative action and reporting.

Justice Oyewole’s confirmation marks a significant addition to the Supreme Court bench, reinforcing Nigeria’s judicial framework at the highest level.
