[VIRAL VIDEO]: Ekpoma DPO Sparks Outrage With ‘Hausa Officer’ Threat To Protesters

A Divisional Police Officer (DPO) in Ekpoma, Edo State, has come under intense public criticism after a viral video showed him allegedly making ethnically charged remarks while addressing protesters in the town.

In the footage circulating widely on social media, the officer—whose identity has not been officially confirmed—is heard warning demonstrators that after his departure from Ekpoma, a “Hausa police officer” who would not tolerate dissent would be posted to the division.

“Don’t worry, I will leave Ekpoma, and they will bring a Hausa officer who won’t listen to anybody,” the officer said in the video.

The protest was reportedly sparked by the killing of a young medical graduate who was murdered by kidnappers despite the payment of ransom, a tragedy that has reignited concerns over worsening insecurity in the area.

Public Backlash Grows

The comment has since triggered widespread condemnation online, with many Nigerians describing the statement as inappropriate, condescending, and divisive—especially coming from a senior officer of the Nigeria Police Force.

Reacting on X (formerly Twitter), users accused the officer of ethnic profiling and conduct unbecoming of a public official entrusted with protecting lives.

Mr Gerald (@Mr_Gerrie01) wrote, “A very insensitive police officer.”

Everything Politics (@Everypolitics1) described the statement as troubling, saying it unfairly stereotypes and dehumanises Hausa people. “Ethnicity should never be used as a threat or a tool of intimidation,” the account stated.

Ekong De Superstar (@EkongGodson) also condemned the remark, noting that a police officer sworn to protect lives should not resort to ethnic rhetoric.

Others, including Mister Balo (@MubarakBalogun) and Iamowolabi (@Iamowolabi01), questioned the professionalism of the comment and urged the officer to focus on his duty of protecting citizens rather than issuing threats.

Calls for Accountability and Better Security

While a few commentators urged the public to consider the broader context of the video, the dominant reaction online has been one of disappointment and concern, particularly given the tense security situation in Ekpoma.

Hephzibah Behulah (@HephzibaBehulah) described the killing of the medical graduate as tragic and said the video reflects growing frustration but warned that invoking ethnicity only deepens divisions.

She added that protesters were right to demand improved security, calling on authorities to increase patrols, strengthen intelligence, and deliver tangible results that would restore public confidence.

As reactions continue to mount, many Nigerians are calling on police authorities to investigate the incident and ensure that officers’ conduct aligns with professionalism, neutrality, and respect for Nigeria’s diverse ethnic composition.

For residents of Ekpoma, the hope remains that authorities will address the root causes of insecurity and prevent further loss of innocent lives.
