Tragedy As Fireworks Explosion Kills Two in Anambra Christmas Carnival

At least two people have been confirmed dead and several others injured following a fireworks explosion during a community Christmas carnival in Umuchu, Aguata Local Government Area of Anambra State.

The tragic incident occurred on Monday, December 29, when a high-intensity firework, popularly known as a knockout, reportedly detonated close to the main stage of the event, triggering panic among fun seekers.

Eyewitnesses said the explosion happened at the peak of the celebration, causing an immediate stampede as people scampered to safety. One of the victims, identified simply as Ugochi, was said to have died on the spot, while another victim later died in the hospital after sustaining severe injuries.

Residents fear the death toll may rise as several victims reportedly suffered serious burns and deep cuts.

“The knockout exploded like a bomb,” an eyewitness narrated. “Those closest to the stage collapsed instantly. The sound was deafening and everywhere became chaotic as people screamed and ran in all directions.”

Videos circulating on social media captured scenes of thick smoke, confusion, and injured persons being rushed for medical attention. A teenage girl, believed to be around 14 years old, was said to have sustained severe neck injuries.

A family member of Ugochi confirmed her death in an audio message shared with journalists, stating that she had only returned to Umuchu for the Christmas holidays and was dancing at the carnival when the explosion occurred.

Residents disclosed that children were among the worst affected, with some sustaining burns to the face and other parts of the body. The fireworks used at the event were allegedly packed in cartons and capable of multiple explosive rounds, which intensified the blast.

As of Tuesday morning, community leaders and local authorities had yet to issue an official statement on the incident. There has also been no formal reaction from the Anambra State Government or emergency agencies, fueling concerns among residents that the tragedy might be downplayed.

Efforts to reach the Anambra State Police Command for comments were unsuccessful at the time of filing this report.

It will be recalled that the Anambra State Police Command earlier banned the use of knockout bangers and other ceremonial explosives during the Christmas and New Year festivities.

The Commissioner of Police, Ikioye Orutugu, announcing the ban in Awka, warned residents to comply with the directive, stressing that the use of such devices remains prohibited in the state to prevent avoidable tragedies.
