The family of the late Solomon Harry, a 31-year-old male from Adiasin Village, Essien Udim Local Government Area, Akwa Ibom State, has abandoned his corpse at the Federal Medical Centre, Umuahia, Abia State, following allegations that his two eyes were removed without their consent.
According to his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Harry Ndotu, Solomon died on August 31, 2025, and was deposited at the hospital's morgue. However, when his family visited the morgue on December 17, 2025, they discovered that his eyes had been removed, and his body was in a state of decay. The family had initially planned to bury him on December 27, 2025, but have since put the burial on hold due to the alleged removal of the eyes, a shift and swelling of the upper and lower jaws, and the suspected decay of the body.
The family has expressed shock and outrage over the incident, citing a breach of trust and dignity. The Royal Friends Rights Advocacy, Development and Empowerment Foundation has taken up the case, calling for an investigation and action against those responsible.
The Federal Medical Centre, Umuahia, has yet to comment on the incident. However, the police have confirmed that an investigation is underway.
This incident highlights concerns about the treatment of corpses in Nigerian hospitals and the need to for improved oversight and accountability. The family is seeking justice and answers, and the case has sparked widespread outrage and calls for action to prevent similar incidents in the future.
