‘Two Opposition Party Governors About To Join APC’

Former presidential aide Bashir Ahmad has set off political speculation after claiming that the Governor of Taraba State and another unnamed governor from the North West are on the verge of officially defecting to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Naija Blog reports that Ahmad made the claim in a post on his verified X (formerly Twitter) account on Tuesday, October 7, writing:

“In just a matter of days, the Governor of Taraba State and another Governor from the North West will officially join our great party, the All Progressives Congress (APC).”

Though Ahmad did not provide further details, his statement has reignited talk of an ongoing wave of defections from opposition parties to the ruling APC ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Taraba State, governed by Agbu Kefas of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), has recently been the focus of political attention amid calls from youth groups urging the governor to align with the ruling party for what they describe as “better access to federal resources.”

Reports suggest that Kefas’ frequent engagements with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and participation in high-level government events have fueled speculation of a possible political shift.

Political observers believe the move, if confirmed, might be motivated more by strategic cooperation with the federal government than by partisan interests.

A political analyst in Jalingo noted,

“The writing may be on the wall. With the 2027 elections approaching, shifts in political allegiance are not uncommon. If Governor Kefas does move to the APC, it may be aimed at securing stronger federal collaboration rather than mere party politics.”

Meanwhile, the Concerned Taraba Youth Group has publicly urged Kefas to defect to the APC, citing the federal government’s neglect of key projects like the Mambilla Hydro Power Project and the Zing–Jalingo–Wukari road.

The group’s spokesperson, Shedrack Iremiya Gani, said,

“Considering the continued abandonment of federal projects in Taraba, we appeal to Governor Agbu Kefas to align with President Bola Tinubu to attract greater federal presence to the state.”

Within the APC, senior insiders reportedly view the development as part of a broader realignment of political forces, with several PDP governors allegedly in advanced talks to switch parties before the next election cycle.
