Peter Obi Celebrates 2025 Ofala Festival of Obi of Onitsha, Hails Igwe Achebe’s Leadership

The 2025 Ofala Festival of His Majesty, Obi of Onitsha, Igwe Nnaemeka Alfred Achebe (Agbogidi), held in grand style on Sunday in Onitsha, Anambra State, drew notable dignitaries, including former governor of Anambra State and Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi.

In a heartfelt message shared after the event, Obi expressed deep admiration for the cultural significance of the Ofala Festival, describing it as one of the most cherished traditional celebrations in Nigeria. He noted that he has attended the festival regularly since his days at Christ the King College, Onitsha, emphasizing its importance in fostering unity and preserving the rich heritage of the Onitsha people.


“The Ofala Festival remains a time when the people of Onitsha come together to honour their revered monarch, celebrate unity, and give thanks to God for life and progress,” Obi stated.

He lauded His Majesty, Igwe Nnaemeka Achebe, for his exemplary leadership, wisdom, and unwavering dedication to preserving the cultural identity of the Onitsha kingdom. Obi noted that under the monarch’s reign, the city has continued to experience peace, progress, and renewed cultural pride.


“It was truly heartwarming to witness the vibrant display of tradition that has stood the test of time and continues to define the identity of our people,” he added.

Obi concluded by praying for long life, wisdom, and good health for the Obi of Onitsha while wishing all indigenes of Onitsha, both at home and in the diaspora, a joyous and peaceful celebration.

The Ofala Festival, an annual event marking the end of the monarch’s traditional retreat and the beginning of a new cycle of leadership, continues to attract visitors and cultural enthusiasts from across Nigeria and beyond.
