NIGERIA THRASH BENIN 4–0 BUT MISS OUT ON AUTOMATIC QUALIFICATION

The Super Eagles of Nigeria produced a stunning performance on Tuesday night, defeating the Cheetahs of Benin Republic 4–0 at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium in Uyo — but the emphatic victory was not enough to secure an automatic qualification spot for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

A brilliant hat-trick from Victor Osimhen and a composed strike from Frank Onyeka sealed the win for Nigeria, who entered the fixture needing both a victory and a favourable result from the other Group C match to top the table.

However, those hopes were dashed after South Africa beat Rwanda 3–0 in Johannesburg, ensuring Bafana Bafanafinished as Group C leaders with 18 points, while Nigeria ended second with 17 points.

Final Group C Standings:
1st – South Africa: 18 pts
2nd – Nigeria: 17 pts
3rd – Benin Republic
4th – Rwanda
5th – Lesotho
6th – Zimbabwe

Despite falling short of automatic qualification, Nigeria remains in contention to qualify as one of the best runners-up — a route that would see them enter the play-offs for another opportunity to reach the global tournament.

Osimhen was the standout performer of the night, terrorizing the Benin defence with his trademark pace and precision. His hat-trick not only highlighted his world-class form but also reaffirmed his vital role in Nigeria’s push for World Cup qualification. Onyeka’s late goal capped off a dominant team display.

While the Super Eagles narrowly missed out on a direct ticket, their performance in Uyo has renewed optimism among fans. Nigeria will now await confirmation from CAF on the best second-placed teams advancing to the next qualification stage.

With confidence, cohesion, and attacking firepower on their side, the Super Eagles remain poised to soar again — as the journey to the 2026 FIFA World Cup in the USA, Canada, and Mexico continues.
