Rashidi Ladoja Set to Become Next Olubadan as Oba Olakulehin Passes On

Former Oyo State governor, Senator Rashidi Adewolu Ladoja, is on track to become the next Olubadan of Ibadanland following the death of Oba Owolabi Olakulehin, who passed away in the early hours of Monday, July 7, 2025 — just two days after marking his 90th birthday.

The late Oba Olakulehin, who received his staff of office from Governor Seyi Makinde in July 2024, reigned for less than a year before joining his ancestors.

Tradition Paves the Way for Ladoja

By Ibadan’s time-tested succession tradition, the Olubadan stool rotates between two ruling lines — the Balogun (military) and Egbe Agba (civil) lines. With the deceased monarch hailing from the Balogun line, it’s now the turn of the Egbe Agba line.

Ladoja, who holds the title of Otun Olubadan (the most senior chief in the civil line), is next in line and widely expected to ascend the throne as the 44th Olubadan.

From Government House to the Palace?

A former senator and governor of Oyo State (2003–2007), Ladoja’s journey from politics to royalty has been long and eventful. After years of debate over his position in the chieftaincy hierarchy, Ladoja was formally crowned Otun Olubadan in August 2024 — a major move that settled long-standing controversies surrounding his eligibility.

That event, which drew dignitaries and political heavyweights, was seen as the final confirmation that Ladoja had embraced the traditional path fully, putting to rest speculation about his reluctance to accept a beaded crown.

Speaking during the ceremony, Ladoja addressed concerns about Ibadan’s chieftaincy structure, saying:

“Ibadan operates a unique system — only the Olubadan is the king. All other crowned kings are advisers.”

He also assured that Ibadanland knows how to settle its internal matters without external interference:

“Anytime we have differences, we resolve them behind closed doors. Those expecting crisis in Ibadan are mistaken.”

What Happens Next?

With Oba Olakulehin now laid to rest, attention has shifted to the Ibadan Traditional Council, which is expected to begin formal processes to install Ladoja as the next monarch.

If confirmed, Senator Rashidi Ladoja will become the 44th Olubadan of Ibadanland, marking a historic transition from a man who once ruled Oyo State as governor to a custodian of Ibadan’s ancient crown.
