Olubadan Owolabi Olakulehin Passes On at 90, Barely a Year After Coronation

The Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Owolabi Olakulehin, has passed away, bringing an end to a short but symbolic reign as the 43rd monarch of the ancient city of Ibadan.

The revered traditional ruler reportedly joined his ancestors in the early hours of Monday, July 7, 2025, just two days after celebrating his 90th birthday on July 5.

Oba Olakulehin ascended the throne in July 2024, and was officially presented with the staff of office by Oyo State Governor, Engr. Seyi Makinde, on July 12, 2024. His reign, though brief, was marked by a continued effort to preserve the cultural heritage and traditions of Ibadanland.

Born in 1935, the late monarch had a long and distinguished history of service within the Ibadan traditional hierarchy. Prior to his ascension, he held several key positions and was respected for his wisdom and calm leadership.

His death comes less than a year after his coronation, and it has thrown the city into a state of mourning. Tributes are expected to pour in from political leaders, traditional rulers, and citizens alike in the coming days.

The Ibadan Traditional Council is expected to make an official announcement and release details regarding funeral arrangements and succession protocols soon.
