The Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) has applauded former Anambra State Governor and Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, over his recent public call for the release of its detained leader, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu.
In a statement issued on Monday, July 7, 2025, and signed by IPOB’s media and publicity secretary, Comrade Emma Powerful, the pro-Biafra group described Obi’s intervention as a “voice of reason” in what it called the “deafening silence and cowardice” of many political leaders, particularly in the South-East.
“Mr. Peter Obi’s call is not only timely but also reflects a voice of reason and restraint,” the group stated.
Obi praised for showing empathy despite past criticism
IPOB acknowledged that although its leader, Nnamdi Kanu, had in the past been critical of Obi, the former governor never responded with hostility. Instead, the group noted, Obi had demonstrated maturity and empathy—even attending the funeral of Kanu’s parents at a time when many prominent Igbo politicians stayed away.
“Peter Obi’s quiet presence [at the funeral] was a rare demonstration of empathy and courage,” IPOB said.
“Nigeria has everything to lose by detaining Kanu” – IPOB
The group noted that Obi’s call for Kanu’s release is in line with global best practices, adding that continuing the detention of the IPOB leader would only deepen Nigeria’s “moral and reputational bankruptcy.”
“Former Governor Peter Obi has recognised—correctly—that Nigeria has nothing to gain and everything to lose by continuing this illegal detention,” the statement added.
IPOB lists allegations against FG
IPOB used the statement to remind Nigerians of what it called the “trial-and-error persecution” of Nnamdi Kanu, stating that since 2015, the Nigerian government has amended its charges against him over nine times.
The group also referenced the 2021 “criminal abduction” of Kanu from Kenya, calling it a violation of international law, Kenya’s Constitution, Nigeria’s Extradition Act, and the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights.
“This matter is now before Justice James Omotosho of the Federal High Court. We urge him to rise above political pressure and deliver judgment based on the facts,” IPOB urged.
Final message to the public and South-East politicians
While stressing that IPOB is not part of Nigeria’s political system, the group said it recognises Obi’s action as a sincere gesture.
“Peter Obi has, by his statement, shown that common sense, integrity, and moral clarity still exist in Nigeria’s suffocating political space,” the statement said.
“It is now up to others, especially those from the South-East, to find the courage to do what is right—not what is convenient.”
