Kaduna Vigilante Commander Killed by Squatters in Grazing Reserve Dispute

Kaduna (Naija Blog) – June 30, 2025
 — A Commander of the Kaduna State Vigilance Service (KADVIS), Saleh Shuaibu—popularly known as Saleh Fiya-Fiya—has been killed during a tense confrontation with squatters occupying the Yardoka Grazing Reserve in Kubau Local Government Area of Kaduna State.

The incident occurred on Sunday, June 28, 2025, during an official visit by Kaduna State Government representatives to enforce a land allocation directive. According to security sources, the government had earmarked over 200 hectares of the reserve for private investment, a move that has sparked resistance from a large community of herders settled in the area.

Conflicting reports have emerged about the compensation status of the squatters. While some claim that no compensation has been paid, others allege that payments were made but the squatters are demanding more.

Government officials, escorted by armed police officers and personnel from the Department of State Services (DSS), were reportedly blocked from entering the grazing reserve by protesting residents. During the standoff, Commander Shuaibu stepped out of his vehicle to mediate but was attacked by protesters wielding sticks and cutlasses. He was fatally stabbed by one of the assailants.

The tragic incident has sent shockwaves through the community and raised concerns over escalating tensions in government-managed reserves. As of press time, no arrests have been confirmed, and security agencies are said to be investigating the situation.

Authorities have yet to issue an official statement on the next steps regarding the land allocation or measures to prevent further violence in the area.
