A heavy downpour has caused severe flooding along parts of the Abuja Airport Road and Lugbe area, leaving motorists and commuters stranded and causing major traffic gridlock.
The flooding occurred on Tuesday, September 1, after hours of intense rainfall swept across several parts of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT). The Airport Road and Lugbe axis were among the worst-hit areas, with floodwaters covering sections of major roads and making movement difficult for motorists.
Videos and photos shared online showed vehicles struggling to move through the flooded roads, while long queues of cars were reportedly trapped in traffic.
One resident said the flooding had completely blocked movement along the federal road, while other social media users described the situation as alarming and called for urgent action from authorities.
The latest flooding comes barely two weeks after other parts of Abuja experienced similar flooding, raising renewed concerns about drainage systems and development around waterways in the nation's capital.
The FCT Administration has previously blamed some flooding problems on illegal structures built on waterways and drainage channels. FCT Minister Nyesom Wike recently ordered the demolition of structures obstructing waterways as part of efforts to address recurring flooding in Abuja.
Residents have continued to call on authorities to improve drainage infrastructure and take stronger measures to prevent further flooding as the rainy season continues.
