The Fédération Internationale de Football Association (FIFA) has launched an official investigation into the post-match confrontation involving players of Argentina and Spain following the dramatic conclusion of the 2026 FIFA World Cup final in New Jersey, United States.
Spain were crowned world champions after defeating defending champions Argentina 1-0 in extra time, securing their second FIFA World Cup title in history. However, the historic victory was overshadowed by chaotic scenes that erupted moments after the final whistle.
In a statement released on Monday, FIFA confirmed that its Disciplinary Committee had commenced an investigation into the incident after reviewing the official match reports submitted by match officials.
According to the world football governing body, a Disciplinary and Ethics Prosecutor has been appointed to determine whether players or officials breached the FIFA Disciplinary Code during the confrontation.
"FIFA's Disciplinary Committee has appointed a Disciplinary and Ethics Prosecutor to investigate potential breaches of the FIFA Disciplinary Code with regard to the post-match incidents," the governing body said.
FIFA added that the outcome of the investigation would be made public after the disciplinary process is completed.
World Cup Celebration Marred by Violence
The final, which was played before a packed crowd in New Jersey, ended in contrasting emotions for both sides.
Spanish players celebrated wildly after the final whistle, while Argentina's stars were left devastated after failing to defend the World Cup title they won four years ago.
The celebrations were, however, interrupted by a heated altercation involving several players from both teams.
Videos circulating across social media showed players exchanging shoves and punches as tensions escalated on the pitch.
One of the most widely shared clips captured Spain's teenage sensation, Lamine Yamal, kneeling with his hands raised in celebration while a physical confrontation unfolded just a few metres behind him.
Argentina midfielder Leandro Paredes appeared to grab Spain defender Eric Garcia by the neck during the melee.
Barcelona midfielder Gavi, who attempted to calm the situation, was allegedly shoved to the ground by Paredes before Argentina manager Lionel Scaloni rushed onto the field to restore order.
Scaloni was seen pulling Paredes away from the confrontation, although the midfielder reportedly continued pushing Spanish players before eventually being restrained by one of his teammates.
Messi, Yamal Display Sportsmanship
Despite the ugly scenes that followed the final whistle, there were moments that reflected mutual respect between the two finalists.
Argentina captain Lionel Messi and Spain forward Lamine Yamal shared a warm embrace after the match, a gesture that many football fans praised as one of the few positive moments amid the tension.
The medal presentation also witnessed an awkward atmosphere.
Spain's players applauded Argentina as the runners-up received their silver medals. However, several Argentine players reportedly did not reciprocate the gesture while Spain collected their gold medals before lifting the FIFA World Cup trophy.
Second Investigation Involving Argentina
The latest disciplinary investigation is the second involving Argentina within a week.
FIFA is already reviewing events that occurred after Argentina's semi-final victory over England, where defender Lisandro Martínez and midfielder Giovani Lo Celso displayed a banner bearing the inscription "Las Malvinas son Argentinas" ("The Falklands are Argentinian") during the team's celebrations.
The banner sparked criticism from British officials because of the longstanding territorial dispute between Argentina and the United Kingdom over the Falkland Islands.
FIFA previously confirmed that it had begun assessing the circumstances surrounding that incident and would determine whether disciplinary measures are necessary.
As of the time of filing this report, FIFA has not announced when either investigation will be concluded or whether any sanctions will be imposed on the players or teams involved.
