The Federal Government has strongly condemned the killing of two Nigerian citizens in South Africa, describing the incidents as unacceptable and calling on South African authorities to ensure those responsible are brought to justice.
In a statement issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the government expressed deep concern over the recent attacks, which occurred amid growing anti-foreigner protests in parts of South Africa. The victims were identified as Emeka Charles Iroegbu and Musa Yunana Joe.
The Federal Government said the continued targeting of Nigerians raises serious concerns about the safety of its citizens living in South Africa. It also criticized inflammatory remarks allegedly made by some South African officials, warning that such statements could fuel further violence against foreign nationals.
Nigeria urged the South African government to carry out a thorough investigation into the killings and prosecute all those involved without delay. The government stressed that every individual deserves a fair hearing under the law, regardless of any allegations against them.
While extending condolences to the families of the victims, the Federal Government advised Nigerians residing in South Africa to remain calm, law-abiding and security conscious, while avoiding areas prone to violence.
The government further warned that if attacks on Nigerians continue, it may be forced to consider stronger diplomatic measures, insisting that the safety and rights of Nigerians abroad must be protected.
