Veteran New Zealand actor Sam Neill, best known for his iconic role as Dr. Alan Grant in the Jurassic Park franchise, has died suddenly at the age of 78 in Sydney, Australia. His family confirmed that the beloved actor passed away on Monday, July 13, describing his death as "sudden and unexpected."
In a statement released by his family, they revealed that Neill remained cancer-free following his battle with lymphoma, adding that he was surrounded by loved ones at the time of his passing.
"Sam was surrounded by family and passed with the dignity that has characterised his whole life. The loss was sudden and unexpected but blessed by the fact that Sam remained cancer-free," the statement read.
Although the family did not disclose the cause of death, they confirmed that Neill had been receiving treatment at St. Vincent's Private Hospital in Sydney.
Tributes have poured in from around the world, with New Zealand Prime Minister Christopher Luxon describing Neill as "one of the greats" whose work helped bring New Zealand's stories to the global stage. Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese also praised the actor, saying he would be remembered for his dignity, humour and remarkable performances.
Born in Northern Ireland in 1947, Neill moved to New Zealand as a child and built an acting career spanning more than five decades. He rose to international fame in 1993 after starring as Dr. Alan Grant in Jurassic Park, later reprising the role in subsequent installments of the blockbuster franchise.
Beyond Jurassic Park, Neill appeared in acclaimed productions including The Piano, The Hunt for Red October, and the television series Peaky Blinders, earning admiration for his versatility across film and television.
Neill publicly revealed in 2023 that he had been diagnosed with stage-three lymphoma and documented his battle in his memoir. Earlier this year, he announced that groundbreaking treatment had left him cancer-free, making news of his sudden passing all the more shocking.
Away from the screen, the actor also ran a successful vineyard in New Zealand's Central Otago region and remained deeply connected to his homeland.
