The Delta State Government has dismissed widespread claims about the existence of a so-called “raping festival” following a disturbing viral video showing women being assaulted in Ozoro.
The shocking footage, which circulated heavily on social media, captured scenes of young men attacking and harassing women during what was falsely described as a traditional festival.
Reacting to the development, the Senior Special Assistant on Media to the Governor, Ossai Ovie, categorically denied the existence of such a festival in the state. He expressed outrage over the incident, describing it as both shocking and unacceptable.
Ovie stated that the government is committed to ensuring that all individuals involved in the attack are identified and prosecuted.
“The individuals involved will face the consequences of their actions, and we’re committed to ensuring justice is served,” he said.
He further emphasized that no culture or tradition in Delta State permits abuse or humiliation, especially against women, stressing that laws are in place to protect all citizens.
Meanwhile, the spokesperson of the Delta State Police Command, Bright Edafe, also condemned the incident, describing it as “alarming, disgusting and embarrassing.”
According to reports, the incident occurred on Thursday, March 19, in Ozoro, where some individuals allegedly attacked women seen in public, forcibly tearing their clothes and assaulting them.
In response, the Commissioner of Police, Aina Adesola, has ordered a full investigation into the matter.
Edafe reiterated that no tradition supersedes the rights and dignity of citizens and assured the public that those responsible would be arrested and brought to justice.
He also called on witnesses to come forward with useful information that could aid the ongoing investigation, as authorities intensify efforts to hold perpetrators accountable.
