The National Association of Nigerian Traders (NANTS) National Executive Council on Thursday held a high-level meeting with the Abia State Governor, Dr. Alex Otti, at the Government House in Umuahia during a three-day state visit to assess developments across the state.
The delegation, which included chairmen of major markets in Abia State, said the visit enabled members to conduct first-hand inspections of ongoing projects and infrastructural improvements.
Speaking during the meeting, NANTS President, Chief Dr. Ken Ukaoha, expressed satisfaction with the pace of development under the current administration. He commended the governor for improving infrastructure, constructing new roads, promoting a cleaner and safer environment, attracting investments, and recruiting technocrats to strengthen governance and economic growth in the state.
The traders also praised ongoing market reconstruction and remodelling efforts, particularly at Ariaria International Market and the Ekeoha Shopping Centre, noting that the projects are already taking shape.
However, the delegation made several requests to the government. They urged the governor to ensure that original shop owners retain ownership of their spaces after remodelling to prevent alleged collusion between contractors and officials. The traders also appealed for a reduction in final payment costs, as well as strict adherence to quality standards in the construction of shops, roads, parks, and other trade-support infrastructure.
In addition, the traders pledged their continued support for Governor Otti’s administration and expressed commitment to backing his re-election bid for a second term to consolidate ongoing development efforts.
Responding, Governor Otti reiterated that no legitimate shop owner would lose their property in any remodelled market. He disclosed that the state government has arranged soft, long-term loan schemes to assist traders in paying construction costs and reclaiming ownership of their shops.
The governor appreciated the support of traders toward his administration and promised further consultations to address their concerns.
The meeting was attended by relevant state commissioners and the Chairman of the Abia State Council of Traditional Rulers, HRM Dr. Linus Nto Mbah.
