The Defence Headquarters (DHQ) has clarified the scope and nature of Nigeria’s long-standing security cooperation with the United States following public speculation about the alleged presence of American troops in the country.
In a statement issued on Thursday in Abuja, the Director of Defence Information, Maj.-Gen. Samaila Uba, explained that the Nigeria–US partnership is structured around capacity building, professional military education, intelligence sharing, logistics support and strategic dialogue.
According to the military, all engagements under the collaboration are carried out with full respect for Nigeria’s sovereignty and strictly within the framework of existing bilateral agreements.
Uba noted that a recent two-day high-level Working Group meeting involving senior US government officials and Nigerian counterparts was held at the Office of the National Security Adviser as part of ongoing cooperation efforts.
He added that the meeting followed earlier engagements held in the United States and focused on strengthening cooperation mechanisms, improving coordination and enhancing accountability in joint efforts to combat terrorism and other transnational threats.
“The proposals discussed are aimed at improving joint security operations while prioritising civilian protection and community safety,” he said, adding that the proposals are still under review by relevant Nigerian authorities.
The Defence spokesman maintained that Nigeria’s international security partnerships remain transparent, policy-driven and fully aligned with constitutional provisions.
