The 2023 presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP), Peter Obi, has clarified that the Africa Democratic Congress (ADC) coalition has agreed to work together and that no candidate is stepping down for him ahead of future political realignments.
Obi made the clarification during an 𝕏 Space session on Sunday night, where he addressed growing speculation about his alleged defection and reported negotiations within opposition coalitions.
The former Anambra State governor stated that he does not need to formally join the ADC, explaining that he has long been part of the coalition from inception.
“I am not joining ADC. I can’t re-join what I am already a part of. I’ve been part of the coalition from day one. Nobody is stepping down for me in ADC. We have all agreed to work together, and Atiku remains my respected leader,” he said.
Obi also reiterated his respect for former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, stressing that collaboration among opposition figures remains key.
Coalition Talks Intensify
Meanwhile, a senior ADC official in Abuja reportedly disclosed that supporters of Peter Obi have already begun preparations in anticipation of his possible formal declaration with the party.
The source revealed that Obi recently met with the ADC National Chairman, Ralphs Okey Nwosu (reported elsewhere as David Mark in some accounts), following earlier requests for him to decide on fully aligning with the party.
According to the source, discussions may have influenced Obi’s political calculations, with indications that he could hold a declaration rally in Enugu on December 31, described as the political capital of the South-East.
The development comes amid heightened political maneuvering as opposition figures explore coalition-building ahead of upcoming electoral cycles.
