Popular Nigerian Activist Killed By Hit and Run Driver [PHOTOS]

A leading Nigerian activist and Secretary of the Joint Action Front (JAF), Comrade Abiodun Aremu, has passed away following a tragic hit-and-run accident in Ota, Ogun State. He was 65.

According to eyewitnesses, the incident occurred around 6:00 p.m. on Sunday, October 12, 2025, when Aremu was struck by an unidentified vehicle while attempting to cross the road. The driver reportedly fled the scene immediately, leaving the veteran pro-labour campaigner critically injured.

Aremu was rushed to a nearby hospital, where doctors made frantic efforts to save his life. Despite being placed on oxygen, he was pronounced dead shortly after.

Confirming his death, Owei Lakemfa, former Secretary-General of the Organisation of African Trade Union Unity and ex-acting General Secretary of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), described the loss as a monumental blow to the Nigerian labour movement.

Lakemfa, speaking on behalf of the Nigeria Labour Movement, said the late activist “joined the pantheon of revolutionaries” on Sunday, October 12. He hailed Aremu as “one of the greatest revolutionaries and internationalists of our time,” whose lifelong dedication to workers’ rights, democracy, and social justice would remain a lasting legacy.

According to him, Aremu’s burial will now take place on Thursday, October 23, 2025, at his residence — No. 30, Kabiru Fatoye Street, Opposite Alaka Field, Ijako Sugar Bus Stop, Ifo Road, along the Lagos–Abeokuta Expressway.

Lakemfa explained that the earlier date of October 13 was postponed to allow time for the mobilisation of comrades, labour leaders, and civil society groups eager to pay their final respects.

“The greatest honour we can give our fearless teacher and leader is to continue in his footsteps and build a world founded on social justice,” Lakemfa added.
