Nigeria’s Minister of Solid Minerals Development, Dele Alake, has called for the immediate shutdown of schools that collect tuition fees in dollars or other foreign currencies, describing the practice as unpatriotic and harmful to the economy.
Alake made the statement at the Nigeria Gold Mining Summit 2025 in Abuja, stressing that such actions undermine President Bola Tinubu’s ongoing efforts to strengthen the nation’s foreign reserves and stabilize the naira.
He noted that charging in foreign currencies contravenes existing laws governing financial transactions within the country, urging relevant authorities to ensure strict enforcement.
The minister’s remarks have drawn mixed public reactions, with some Nigerians backing the move as a step toward economic sovereignty, while others question the government’s capacity to enforce the policy amid the broader economic hardship.
