IPOB Commends Police Restraint, Denies Organising #FreeNnamdiKanuNow Protest

The Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) has praised the Nigeria Police Force for what it described as a “measured and professional” response to the planned #FreeNnamdiKanuNow protest, while clarifying that the movement is not behind the rally.

In a statement issued on Saturday, October 18, 2025, by its spokesperson, Comrade Emma Powerful, IPOB acknowledged the Police press release signed by CSP Benjamin Hundeyin regarding the Federal High Court order in Suit No. FHC/ABJ/CS/2202/2025 — Federal Republic of Nigeria v. Omoyele Sowore & 4 Others.

The Police had reminded the public of the court’s directive restricting protests around sensitive areas of Abuja, including Aso Rock Villa and the National Assembly Complex.

Emma Powerful commended the Police for adopting a tone that reflects professionalism and respect for democratic values, saying it marked “a welcome departure from the inflammatory and heavy-handed rhetoric that once defined official responses to civic dissent.”

He urged the Police to maintain the same standard in action, not just words, stressing that “the integrity of their institution rests on impartial enforcement of the law.”

However, IPOB expressed concern over past incidents where, according to the group, “elements within the security architecture” allegedly infiltrated peaceful protests with hired provocateurs to cause chaos and discredit legitimate movements. The group urged the Police to prevent such tactics during the upcoming demonstrations.

“For the avoidance of doubt, the #FreeNnamdiKanuNow campaign and any associated peaceful demonstrations are not organized by IPOB,” the statement clarified. “The campaign is a broad-based civic effort by human rights activists and pro-democracy advocates, including Omoyele Sowore and his team.”

While distancing itself from direct involvement, IPOB reaffirmed its full support for the campaign’s call for justice and the release of its detained leader, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu.

“The agitation for Mazi Nnamdi Kanu’s release transcends ethnicity, religion, or politics,” the group said, describing it as a “universal demand for justice and respect for the rule of law.”

Emma Powerful further directed IPOB members to remain calm, obey court restrictions, and avoid confrontation or disorder. He also called on the Police to “protect peaceful demonstrators, not provoke or persecute them,” warning that “the world is watching.”

He concluded by reaffirming IPOB’s commitment to non-violence, lawful advocacy, and peaceful engagement, praying for the safety of all participants in the struggle.

“Let peace prevail, and let those who profit from chaos and oppression be exposed by the collective unity of a people yearning for justice,” the statement added.
