Did Boko Haram Take Over Nigerian Army Barracks? Fact Emerges As Video Goes Viral

A video circulating on social media claiming that Boko Haram terrorists took over several Nigerian military barracks has been found to be false.

The clip, shared by an X (formerly Twitter) user @K3lv1nB0b0 on Sunday, October 12, showed armed men in military trucks firing weapons and celebrating. The post, which was captioned “Boko Haram taking over many Nigerian military barracks and rejoicing for their victory”, quickly went viral — amassing over one million views, 3,000 likes, and nearly 3,000 reposts.

However, a fact-check by Legit.ng revealed that the video did not originate from Nigeria. A reverse image search traced the footage to a Sudanese Facebook page, where it was first posted in September 2025.

A clearer version later uploaded to YouTube showed that the soldiers’ camouflage uniforms carried the Sudanese flag crest, confirming that the video was filmed in Sudan, not Nigeria.

The Nigerian Army also dismissed the claim, describing it as false and misleading, warning the public against spreading unverified information that could cause panic.

While Nigeria continues to battle Boko Haram insurgents in the northeast — a conflict that has caused over 38,000 deaths and displaced 2.5 million people — no evidence supports the claim that the group recently seized any military barracks.

The viral video, therefore, is misleading and unrelated to Boko Haram or any Nigerian military facility.
