Aloy Ejimakor, special counsel to detained IPOB leader, Nnamdi Kanu, has reportedly fallen seriously ill at the Kuje Correctional Centre in Abuja, just 24 hours after a magistrate allegedly refused to sign his bail bond.
According to SaharaReporters, Ejimakor, who was arrested alongside 12 others — including Nnamdi Kanu’s younger brother, Prince Emmanuel Kanu — during the recent #FreeNnamdiKanuNow protest, has been unable to stand or sit upright since the incident. Prison nurses are said to be attending to him as his condition deteriorates.
Sources within the facility revealed that Ejimakor could not meet with his counsel, Barrister Maxwell Opara, during a scheduled visit, as he was reportedly too weak to move. There are indications that he may soon be transferred to a hospital for further treatment.
Ejimakor and the others were arrested on Monday by the Nigerian police, teargassed, beaten, and detained overnight at the notorious SARS cell, known as “Abattoir.” The following day, they were arraigned before Senior Magistrate Abubakar Umar Sai’id at Kuje without legal representation and summarily remanded.
Despite granting bail to Ejimakor and others — including human rights activist and former presidential candidate, Omoyele Sowore — the magistrate allegedly disappeared without signing the bail bond, effectively keeping them in custody.
As of press time, Ejimakor remains under medical attention at the Kuje prison clinic, with reports suggesting his health is rapidly worsening.
