“Where Did You Learn to Speak Such Beautiful English?” — Trump Questions Liberian President Joseph Boakai in Viral Video

A viral video has sparked a wave of reactions across social media after former U.S. President Donald Trump was seen questioning Liberian President Joseph Boakai about his English-speaking skills, expressing surprise and admiration for the African leader’s accent.

In the footage, President Boakai had expressed a desire to partner with the United States on promoting regional stability and preventing conflict in West Africa. However, Trump's response diverted attention from policy to linguistics:

“You speak good. Where did you learn to speak so beautiful English? You were educated where?” Trump asked.

Boakai, in a calm and respectful tone, replied that he was educated in Liberia, prompting Trump to nod approvingly and commend his articulation.

Notably, President Boakai is an alumnus of the College of West Africa, one of Liberia’s top secondary schools, and obtained a bachelor’s degree in Business Administration from the University of Liberia in 1972.

Social Media Reactions

The exchange has ignited mixed responses online, with many users critiquing the tone and implication of Trump’s comments.

  • Nze Chioma wrote: “A president in Africa is answering another president in America yes sir 😂😂.”

  • Kene Mark added: “Tinubu told us he schooled in America. Make him go nah make Oga Trump interview him for us.”

  • Obiara Junior expressed displeasure: “Very disrespectful compliment. I usually feel disrespected when some English colleagues give me this kinda compliment. Like they’re indirectly saying most Nigerians they come across don’t speak good English 😒.”

  • Anum Simeon commented: “Power pass power. The president of a country answering ‘Yes sir’ to another president of a different country.”

While some viewers saw the moment as light-hearted or even complimentary, others viewed Trump’s remarks as condescending and reflective of a deeper bias about African leaders and their competence.

The incident adds to a long list of controversial comments Trump has made regarding African countries and leaders during and after his presidency.
