KANO — The Kano State chapter of the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) has firmly denied reports suggesting that its national leader and former presidential candidate, Senator Rabi’u Musa Kwankwaso, is planning to defect to the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Speaking at a press briefing on Tuesday, NNPP Kano Chairman, Alhaji Hashim Sulaiman Dugunrawa, dismissed the defection rumours as unfounded but said the widespread speculation highlights Kwankwaso’s continued political relevance.
“We are happy that people are spreading it. It only shows how politically relevant Senator Kwankwaso remains,” Dugunrawa stated.
He emphasized that Kwankwaso is widely seen as a man of honour, integrity, and focus — not someone tainted by corruption or irrelevance.
“People believe and are convinced that he is neither a thief nor a fraudster nor a political deadwood, but a person highly blessed with integrity and a focused politician,” he added.
While acknowledging the historic political relationship between Kwankwaso and President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Dugunrawa clarified that such connections do not signal a return to the APC.
“As you will recall, they were both governors at the same time. They were also lawmakers and great personalities who governed two reputable states in the country,” he noted.
He urged the public to disregard the defection rumour, reiterating that no official move has been made.
“The plan of the former presidential candidate of the NNPP to defect is just a rumour. Personally, I cannot base anything on speculation,” Dugunrawa said.
