Court Sentences Woman to 5 Years Imprisonment for Human Trafficking in Anambra

A High Court sitting in Awka, Anambra State, has sentenced a 44-year-old woman, Goodness Daniel, to five years’ imprisonment for human trafficking, with an option of a ₦2 million fine.

The verdict was delivered by Justice Peace Otti on June 27, 2025, following Daniel’s conviction for buying and selling human beings, an offence contrary to Section 21 of the Trafficking in Persons (Prohibition) Enforcement and Administration Act, 2015.

Daniel was prosecuted by the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP), Anambra State Command, after being arraigned on July 9, 2024, on charges bordering on human trafficking.

According to court documents obtained by our correspondent on Thursday, the court found the defendant guilty of the offence and sentenced her accordingly. In addition to the prison term and fine, Justice Otti also ordered the convict to pay a sum of ₦2.6 million as restitution to the victim, who served as a prosecution witness in the trial.

The case marks a significant milestone in NAPTIP’s ongoing efforts to tackle human trafficking and uphold the rights and dignity of victims nationwide.

In a statement, the agency reaffirmed its commitment to bringing traffickers to justice and called on the public to support efforts to eradicate the crime across all levels of society.
