The Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, has ordered a full-scale investigation into claims made by a retired Superintendent of Police who rejected a ₦2 million retirement benefit in a viral video, citing frustration with the treatment of police pensioners.

The retired officer, who served in the Nigeria Police Force for 35 years and exited service on October 1, 2023, revealed in the video that the Nigeria Police Pension Board had approved a total benefit of ₦3 million—comprising ₦1 million in arrears and ₦2 million as full terminal payout.

Expressing his dismay, the officer said the amount was grossly inadequate after decades of service to the nation.

Reacting to the public outcry, the Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, issued a statement on Thursday confirming that the IGP had instructed the NPF Pensions Limited to immediately look into the matter, identify any procedural lapses, and take appropriate action.

“The Nigeria Police Force is not insensitive to the plight of its pensioners,” the statement read. “The IGP views the welfare of both serving and retired officers as a priority and recognises that timely and adequate pension administration is crucial to sustaining morale and institutional integrity.”

Egbetokun also emphasized the value of constructive feedback in driving reforms, noting that efforts had been ongoing to improve the police pension system.

He reassured both active and retired officers—and their families—of the Force’s commitment to ensuring a more dignified pension system that reflects the officers' years of dedication.

The IGP urged all stakeholders to remain calm and patient while the investigation unfolds, assuring that relevant agencies would be engaged to ensure lasting solutions.
